living history

Cestrescire members in camp

Cestrescire is a living history group covering Anglo-Saxon, Viking and Norman England. Living history means that we attempt to recreate life as it was in the past. As a member we can help you to learn about, and re-enact whatever aspect of period life interests you. As a client, we can help you put together an interactive display that meets your needs.

activities

Paul Waddington at a Regia battle, in front of ruins.
  • Public displays and events
  • Banquets
  • School visits
  • Film work
  • Training and practice sessions.

These are a few examples of activities we engage in. Anything, that involves re-creating our period, interests us.

For members we have a broad range of activities. Every member is encouraged to explore whatever aspect of early medievlal life seems interesting. Fighting, cooking, clothes-making, leatherworking, embroidery, horse riding and many more have been practised by Cestrescire members.

equipment

Every member of Cestrescire builds up a set of authentic clothing and equipment. We learn about how it was made, what it was for, how to use it and how we know about it. Every member learns to portray an period character be it in a show, at a school visit, on film work or in any of our other activities.

As a group, Cestrescire has a stock of equipment to support our activities. Tents and work shelters, cooking and crafting equipment. Tables and chairs, cutlery and crockery - all the we need to set up an authentic Anglo-Saxon camp.

re-enactment

Is Cestresicre a re-enactment group?

Yes. But we prefer the term living history. Instead of just acting out a sketchy sequence of events, we take what we know of history, based on good evidence, and bring it to life.

Our encampment is called the "Living History Exhibit" (LHE). It is an detailed. interactive glimpse of life in the period.

what we do, what we don't

Remember, our aim at heart is simple: to portray life in our period as authentically as possible (safely, legally and responsibly). What does that mean to you, as a potential member or client?

We do give authentic displays which can help people learn about our period. We do not replace other ways of learning. Our aim is to immerse you in history, and stimulate interest. If you just want to enjoy the show, that's fine!

We do aim to depict the social, political and religious setting of our period. We do not promote any particular viewpoint. We depict history as accurately as we can - nothing more, nothing less.

We do aim to make our activities enjoyable - both for participants and spectators. We do not mis-represent history to try to be more entertaining. What we do may not interest everyone, and that's OK.
